Underhand Chop

Split or Standing Block Chop are not eligible for this event.
- Prior to the event, the judge will measure the diameter of
the log. The competitors will indicate the areas to be chopped.
- No team members may assist in supporting the cant. Chains,
spikes or stanchions may be used.
- Upon completion of the first competitor's chop the second
competitor may begin. Each competitor may turn once during the
chop. Should the second competitor begin chopping before the
first competitor has completed, disqualification will result.
- Total time is taken from the GO signal until the completion
of the second cut.
- All chopping must occur between footholds. A thirty second
penalty will be issued should a competitor cut into footholds.
- Once the first competitor has completed his/her cut, he/she
may not restart chopping. Disqualification will result if this
takes place.
- Upon inspection by the judge, if an incomplete cut is found,
a thirty (30) second penalty will be issued.
- Should a competitor be caught kicking apart the few remaining
threads of an unfinished cut or completing a cut in any other
manner, a disqualification will result.
- Should a competitor fall off the log and then strike it with
his/her axe, a thirty (30) second penalty will result.
- A maximum five (5) minute time limit will be allotted per competitor. Any team reaching this time will be awarded points based
on a percentage of the winning time.
- The maximum diameter of logs for ladies is 15.24 x 15.24 cms (6 x 6 inches) if squared, and 22.86 cms (9 inches) if round. The maximum size for men will be 20.32 x 20.32 cms (8 x 8 inches) if squared, and 27.94 (11 inches) if round.
- Athletes must be protected by steel from toes to and including their shins. If this protection comes off at any time during the event, they must be put back on immediately or disqualification will result. Time will continue to run.
- If the log becomes dislodged from its stanchions before completing the cut, the team is disqualified.
- Setup
Setup for Underhand Chop coral must be 20 feet by 20 feet and rules must stipulate that only the competitor and the judge are allowed in the coral. The corral must be determined by the head judge to be a safe
distance from the spectators.
Ensure the teams and spectators are kept at a safe distance.
Only competing athletes are permitted in the corral.
