Water Boil
Core Singles / Safety Code Blue

  1. Using a block of cedar, a hatchet, and some matches, the competitor(s) is/are required to boil a mixture of 250 milliliters (8 ounces) of soapy water.

  2. Matches must be Red Bird "Strike Anywhere" large, wooden matches.

  3. Competitor(s) supply their own hatchet (maximum head weight of 1.13 kilos (2.5 lbs.) . The block of dried cedar should be a minimum of 8-10 inches in diameter and limited to two knots per block, three matches and a can of 250 milliliters (8 ounces) of soapy water are provided by the host school. One (1) wooden cookie may be used as a splitting platform only. Fires may be built on wooden discs only if supplied by host school.

  4. Only one (1) hatchet may be used to complete the event.

  5. The competitor(s) must start a fire using the cedar and the three (3) matches supplied.

  6. The fire is used to heat and boil the soapy mixture.

  7. Total time is taken from the starting signal, until the water boils over the edge of the can.

  8. If water spills out of the can in any manner before it has boiled, another can must be obtained from the judge or a central location.

  9. Competitor(s) will be able to obtain additional matches, one at a time, from their judge.

  10. Lids of any kind may not be used to cover the top of the can.

  11. If more than ten (10) minutes is taken to boil the water, a total time of ten (10) minutes is given.

  12. If any individual other than the competitor(s) assists in a physical manner, disqualification will result.

  13. All team members and spectators must be outside of barricades at a minimum distance of three (3) metres or, if event is in heats, competitors must be in centre of corral.

  14. In the event of serious injury and the judge has deemed that the competitor must cease, the time will be taken if the water eventually boils over.

  15. Setup
    The set up for the Water Boil corral must be 20 feet by 20 feet and rules must stipulate that only the competitor and the judge are allowed in the coral. The corral must be determined by the head judge to be a safe distance from the spectators.
    There must be first aid on site.
    There must be fire extinguishers on site.
